Corn-Free / Egg-Free List

with one comment

I will organize this better later. This is a list of foods that are corn-free and egg-free. I’m making this list because I just found out my son is allergic to both foods. Perhaps it will help others out there who also need to restrict their diets. Please don’t look at this list as the law, it’s just a guideline and a place for me to note my own research and reactions in my household. Where possible, I’m including links / names for verification, but I’m new at this and there is a lot to learn. Double check to be safe. Formulas can change. Don’t come crying to me if you don’t read the ingredients. :) For a really comprehensive list of stuff like this, visit these guys. (Make sure the version you’re checking out is the latest…)

10/22/2007 — Confirmed with Benadryl (1.800.524.2624) that the Children’s Benadryl Dye Free Liquid Bubble Gum flavor is corn-free.

10/22/2007 — Confirmed with Frito Lay that Frito Lay Classic potato chips have no corn ingredients. Bonus — they’re fried in sunflower oil which is our oil for that day. Miracle!

9/11/2007 — General Mills Products — Customer service representative Bobbie confirmed that all salt used in General Mills products is non-iodized and without additives with the exception of certain Progresso soups which use sea salt. That sea salt is also non-iodized / non-additive containing however, so safe for corn-free folks if that’s the only ingredient tripping you up.

Dublin Dr. Pepper doesn’t contain corn syrup or anything corn-derived (1-800-696-5891 per April).

9/11/2007 — Email from Chicquilla at Minute Maid: “Our Minute Maid Orange Juice in the frozen concentrate packaging does not containt egg or corn.”

9/11/2007 — Gold Medal Unbleached Flour — (egg-free / corn-free confirmed with customer service representative Bobbie via phone)

9/11/2007 — King Arthur Unbleached Flour, King Arthur Unbleached Bread Flour, King Arthur White Whole Wheat, (egg-free / corn-free confirmed with Baker Mary via phone)

9/11/2007 — Kroger Brand Soy Sauce, Naturally Brewed which lists Sea Salt as an ingredient (black label, bar code 011110739513) Kroger Representative Keisha (1.800.632.6900) confirmed with a Kroger dietitian that if iodized salt (which contains dextrose, a corn product) is used in a product, then it is listed as such. Their sea salt is not iodized, so this is an inexpensive soy sauce to use and it’s brewed to boot (some “soy” sauces don’t even contain soy, you might be surprised to learn — good for those with soy allergies, but not so much for everyone else.)

Hershey’s Unsweetened Cocoa Powder (nothing but cocoa in there — no reaction noted on my kid)

Confirmed via email that Domino Light Brown Sugar / Dark Brown Sugar contain no colorings or corn.

Pacific Natural Foods (a good, helpful contact there is Beth Martin. 503.692-9666. She’s even worked to get the soups stocked at my local Sprouts. Rock on.) — I have good luck currently finding Pacific Natural Foods products at Kroger and Whole Foods. They are GREAT for kid lunches in a thermos or to use broth for making rice and gravies. Their allergy info is available in .pdf or .xls

  1. Thank you Mamarati!!! My 4 year old son, who has Down syndrome, has a severe corn intolerance. He can’t even tolerate meat, dairy, or egg from corn-fed animals, and has problems with cereals that technically don’t have corn ingredients, but whose manufactures also produce corn-containing varieties. It’s sad, because so far I have a list of only about 8 foods he can eat (the corn-based wax on grocery store produce affects him, but hopefully I can start making trips to the farmers’ market and expand his reperatoire), and he’s getting to the age where he notices that what we’re eating looks better than his!

I also have a 5yr old daughter w/ a peanut allergy, and I’ll tell you what–Down syndrome is a walk in the park compared to food issues!!!
Question: do you know if the egg used in the allergy testing would be affected by the corn in the chickens’ feed? I’m curious, because we are looking into getting chickens to raise corn-free eggs for my son.
Thanks again for a great list!
